Family trips and entertainment

If you fancy something a little different from the beach then depending on how fit or mad you are there is a great choice of excursions. Around Oludeniz and neighbouring countryside there are many treks available in the surrounding pine forests. A popular walk is the one down through the pine forests from Hisaronu to the beach. If you are feeling a wee bit fitter then why not take on Mount Babadag, all 1969 metres of it. Once you get to the top you can join all the other mad people and jump off it – paragliding.

If you crave an adrenalin rush then white water rafting on the river Dalaman River should satisfy your craving. An alternative way to see the countryside, which does not involve jumping off mountains or going down angry rivers, is to go on jeep safari. This way you’ll get to enjoy this beautiful part of the country without the risk of being planted in it!

Shopping

Olu Deniz and the immediate surrounding resorts are not really all that good for shopping, although out of the three, Hisaronu is perhaps the best, with a local market every Monday. It also has a new mall offering some retail therapy but if you are looking for more than beach towels and small gifts then head off to Fethiye where there is a lot more choice. Try to go on a Tuesday when the market is on and here you can get great bargains, depending on how hard you pazarlik/bargain.

The resort

Olu Deniz is situated on the south west coast of Turkey. This Mediterranean resort is just a few miles from the popular resort of Fethiye. The Olu Deniz referred to in many brochures is actually three separate resorts, Olu Deniz, Ovacik, and Hisaronu. Olu Deniz is the resort beside the sea and the other two resorts are on a plateaux some 1000ft above sea level - so make sure you know where you are going before booking your holiday.

The main resort of Olu Deniz sits on the beach and inside the national park area of Oludeniz. As a result of this, development has been restricted to low-rise hotels and buildings which adds to the attraction of this pretty resort. This resort is very popular with families, in particular British families who love its picturesque scenery, relaxed atmosphere and lack of nightclubs!

Many who have visited Olu Deniz for the first time seem to have that Déjà Vu feeling. This is because Olu Deniz beach and the neighbouring blue lagoon feature in nearly every Turkish promo advert and poster and it has also featured in a few films.

Olu Deniz is great for families as the sandy beach slopes gently into the sea where it remains quite shallow particularly in the lagoon. The sand on Oludeniz is a little course and some may find it uncomfortable to walk on so we recommend bringing beach shoes or flip flops. On the beach there is a wealth of activities you and your family can take part in from banana boat rides to waterskiing or just plain swimming, the choice is yours.
