Shopping

Marmaris offers a huge choice of shops and stalls. Wandering through its many winding streets is not only a good way to find the ultimate bargain but it is also a great way of exploring the town. Look out for locally produced pine honey, a speciality of the area as well as ceramics and pottery, leathers and embroidery work.

If you are looking to bag something more up market you can either buy a good quality counterfeit garment, if such a thing exists, or head over to the marina where there are a few shops selling upmarket designer goods. The local market is on a Friday and is a great place to get real bargains, but prepare to pazarlik/bargain for your desired item.

Family trips

Marmaris has a lot to offer if you don’t want to spend all your time on the beach. In the bay area there are several sea caves and caverns which local companies offer trips to. Top of your list to explore should be the Fosforlu cavern.

Cleopatra Island is definitely worth a visit, and not just for its glorious scenery but to also walk in the footsteps and Cleopatra and Anthony. There are many boat trips to this island where you can explore the island in the morning and in the afternoon relax on the same beach as Cleopatra did.

If you want to spend time on dry land and fancy a bit of exploring then why not go on a jeep safari. This is a great way to see the countryside, travelling along dirt tracks where no other vehicle can go and then finishing off with a swim at a local waterfall.

If you fancy a wee bit more excitement then go white-water rafting down the Dalman River. Not only do get to see the countryside from a completely different perspective you also get a buzz from running the rapids. Don’t worry about falling though, as you will fall in, it just adds to the fun.

The beaches

Marmaris beach runs along the length of the resort and can get quite busy during the height of the season. The beach is a shingle beach, typical of this area, which some small children might find uncomfortable to walk on, therefore bring either flip flops or swimming shoes. On the beach there are the usual activities banana boats, pedalos, waterskiing and jet boats. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops close to the beach.

Further afield is the Icmeler Beach which is usually less crowded and certainly wider than Marmaris, although don’t expect the sand to change dramatically. If you are feeling energetic you can walk along the 8km sea path to Icmeler beach or if you want to save yourself for later, jump on a dolums. Icmeler is a quieter resort than Marmaris, but you’ll still find the usual beach activities which will no doubt keep your kids happy for a while.

The resort

Marmaris is situated on the south west coast of Turkey in a sheltered bay, between the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. Since the late eighties this resort has grown in popularity especially amongst the British holiday makers and is now established as a firm favourite, challenging the Spanish resorts in appeal and value for money.

Marmaris bay area forms a natural harbour and through the ages has attracted a lot of attention. The Romans, the Crusaders, the Byzantines, and Ottomans have all used the bay to great effect. Legend has it that Mark Anthony and Cleopatra holidayed on one of the islands in the bay and enjoyed the island so much that Mark Anthony decided to improve the beach by importing white sand from Egypt. The island is now called, Cleopatra’s Island and yes it has a beautiful white sandy beach which geologists believe came from Egypt.

The resort town of Marmaris is vibrant and exciting and manages to satisfy all types. From young people wanting to party all night to families wanting to sleep all night, Marmaris is a resort which can cater for any taste. The marina also attracts the well-to-do who stop off in their expensive yachts to explore Marmaris. So you can expect to find some rather expensive restaurants and designer-wear shops around the marina and harbour.
