Gundogan Holidays
Gundogan is a small beautiful resort set in a quiet cove on the Bodrum Peninsula – a great family holiday destination to re-charge the batteries.
Gundogan, Turkey,
The Resort
Gundogan is situated on the Bodrum Peninsula in the south west of Turkey. This Aegean beach resort village may be only 12 miles from Bodrum but it is a world apart in terms of pace and feel. Gundogan is a low key relaxed resort filled with people only interested in one thing – relaxing.
Unsurprisingly the name of the resort has nothing to do with guns or dogs or anything even remotely close to its British pronunciation. Gundogan was formally known as Farilya which is ancient Greek for sunrise and can still be seen on some signs in the area. The sunrise, if you ever manage to see it, is quite a sight to see as it rises above the hills awakening the whitewashed villas and hotels of Gundogan.
The beach at Gundogan varies from no sand and jetties to a lovely beach area with sun-loungers which is ideal for children to play and swim in the warm sea. The jetties are used for sunbathing and swimming and are associated with hotels which don’t have direct access to a beach.
Family Entertainment and Trips
Gundogan is a low key resort with not much in the way of nightclubs and noisy bars which makes it such a good family resort. This relaxed atmosphere means that you are relaxed and this of course transfers to your children.
In terms of restaurants, you'll have your pick of them down by the harbour and waterfront area. If your children are fussy eaters then there are restaurants which will cater for them selling steak and chips, pizza and chips etc. There is also a good selection of restaurants selling Turkish food which is simple and delicious.
If you fancy a break from the beach a good trip is to pop round the coast, either on land by dolmus or on sea, to the picturesque beach resort of Gumusluk. Here you wade over to Rabbit Island and explore this curious place – bring either flip-flops or swimming shoes as the wade is quite stony. If your troops are looking for something a bit more exciting then take them to the Aquapark Dedeman where they’ll get their adrenalin rush.
Shopping
Before tourism, fishing was the main source of income on the Bodrum peninsula. Although most of the fishing fleet has all but disappeared, sponge fishing is still a source of income for some locals. One of the best places to buy sponges is in the Yalikavak, the St Tropez of Turkey.
Gundogan itself is not really big on shops, although if you really want to avoid them, you’ll be able to get all your gifts and souvenirs there. If you feel the need for some retail therapy then head over to Bodrum where there are a great number of shops and markets selling everything you didn’t know you needed!
