Holidays in Greece

Watersports are available in almost every resort, with facilities ranging from paragliding to windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skis and pedalos as well as snorkelling and scuba diving.

Eating and drinking

The major resorts offer bars and restaurants to suit all tastes, from all-night clubs to international restaurants, tavernas serving typical Greek fare and child-friendly menus. Nightlife in the smaller resorts has a much more traditional feel and tends to be centred around the tavernas.

Speciality dishes include Kleftiko, a kind of stew baked slowly in paper to retain all the juices; dolmades, rice and herbs wrapped in vine leaves; briam, slow-braised mixed vegetables; saganaki, oven-baked mussels with cheese; and souvlaki, grilled skewers of meat. Greek drinks include; Retsina, a local white wine scented with pine resin or Ouzo, distilled liquor with a distinctive aniseed flavour.

Greek Islands and Mainland

Greece has some 1400 islands dotted across the waters of the Aegean and Ionian Seas, each unique, though all offer idyllic beaches, authentic tavernas and Greek hospitality.

The IONIAN ISLANDS are situated off the west coast of mainland Greece and include Corfu, Kefalonia and Zante. The CYCLADES comprises of 39 islands that lie south east of mainland Greece, two of the most popular are Mykonos and Santorini. The SPORADES are situated east of the mainland and comprise of just 11 islands of which 4 are inhabited, the most known are Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. The DODECANESE ISLANDS are located close to Turkey at the most eastern point of the Aegean Sea, famous for archaeological sites, Byzantine churches and artefacts from the Venetian era, Rhodes and Kos are two of the most popular islands. CRETE is the largest of the Greek islands, and has a multitude of different resorts to suit all needs, be it lively with bars to party into the early hours or in search of a relaxing evening in a traditional Greek taverna. The HALKIDIKI area of north eastern mainland Greece is very popular and offers everything that the Greek islands do.
