The Beaches
The beaches in the south of Tenerife are preferred by tourists, mainly because the south enjoys more hours of sunshine than in the north, most of these beaches have imported sand and provide a good selection of watersports. El Medano is one of the best natural beaches on the island, about 20km from Playa de las Americas, this beach has 2km of white sand and is a good spot for windsurfing. In the north by Santa Cruz there is Playa las Teresitas with imported sands or if you don’t mind black, volcanic sand, Playa Jardin beach at Puerto de la Cruz is rarely crowded and there are plenty of cafes and bars lining the seafront.
The Resorts
The liveliest resort is Playa de las Americas offering easy access to the best choice of golf, waterparks, watersports and nightlife. Neighbouring Los Cristianos is joined by a promenade lined with restaurants offering everything from Chinese to fast food, bars, cafes and shops; and in the other direction is Costa Adeje, an off-shot of Las Americas but with a more family vibe. The main resort in the north of the island is Puerto de la Cruz and is home to the Loro Parque as well as a large saltwater lido.
Things To Do
Tenerife has a host of entertainment options of both the cultural and holiday fun kind, sure to keep all family members happy. One of the many excursions available is to Teide National Park; Mount Teide is the third biggest volcano in the world which last erupted some 150,000 years ago; alternatively spend the day at sea dolphin and whale spotting. Waterparks and theme parks are aplenty in Tenerife, the islands newest waterpark; Siam Park opened in September 2008 in Costa Adeje and is full of thrilling rides and attractions including a wave pool, the Wave Palace for surfers and a children’s pool. For the more energetic there is a wide selection of watersports available, from jet skiing to parasailing, windsurfing and diving; and on dry land there are 9 golf courses to choose from.
