Things To Do
The island offers many alternatives to a day on the beach sure to entertain all family members. A popular day out on the island is to the Timanfaya National Park; here you can take a camel-ride up the slopes of the volcanoes for views across this unique landscape or from Puerto Calero a submarine ride is the perfect opportunity for viewing the marine life of Lanzarote whilst remaining dry. Located just outside Puerto del Carmen is Rancho Texas a Western Theme Park which features a nature park and an Indian-style village with tepees, in the evenings the park offers entertainment for all the family with country and western music, line dancing and a lasso show. Situated in the north at the foot of the Corona Volcano is the Guinate Tropical Park with 45,000 sq metres of gardens, waterfalls and ponds, home to many species of birds, animals, reptiles and fish, also in the north are the Green Caves which formed around 3000 years ago during the eruption of the Corona Volcano.
The Beaches
With 99 beaches to choose from, Lanzarote has a beach for all holidaymakers from families to surfers and naturists. The best beach of the island and popular with nudists is Papagayo Beach not far from the resort of Playa Blanca. The main beach in Puerto del Carmen is Playa Grande and has 6km of sandy beach, with sunbeds, parasols and pedalos for hire. Costa Teguise’s beach (Playa de las Cucharas) is great for watersports such as scuba diving and windsurfing while Famara Beach on the north-west coast of the island is a surfer’s paradise.
Shopping
Numerous boutiques can be found in the main resorts, though the best shopping districts are Calle Real in Arrecife, the Biosfera Shopping Centre in Puerto del Carmen and Deiland Shopping Centre in Playa Honda. Alternatively the islands biggest street market takes place every Sunday morning in Teguise, here you will find a wide variety of stalls selling handmade pottery, lace and embroidery, African wood carvings as well as fruit and vegetables. The Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca also holds a market every Wednesday morning.
