  The Resort - Less
Marsa Alam is situated on the east coast of Egypt on the Red Sea close to the Tropic of Cancer. It is approximately 150 miles south of Hurghada and 40 miles from Marsa Alam International Airport.

Marsa Alam was until relatively recently a quiet fishing village on the Red Sea coast. The Egyptian government saw the potential of its incredible natural resources - its beautiful beaches, coral reefs and crystal clear seas - for tourist development that it invested heavily in this area. Not only have the government invested in this area but many top hotel chains have also had the vision and built large luxury hotel complexes.

Marsa Alam is a favourite place for divers to come. The warm tropical waters of the Red Sea mean that the marine life is quite simply incredible, where the sight of dolphins and hammerhead sharks is common. However, Marsa Aslam is not only a top dive location it is also a great family destination. Families can enjoy its quiet beaches, relaxed atmosphere and brand new luxurious hotels with facilities dedicated to family holidays.

  Shopping - More
Don't expect great shops in Marsa Alam. There are of course some shops and stalls selling local crafts and souvenirs and some essentials. Things to look out for are jewellery, perfume, leather and spices. If you are intent in doing some retail therapy then jump into a taxi and head North to Port Ghalib where you'll find a lot of good shops on the Corniche and a typical Egyptian Bazaar known as the Khan.

Family Entertainment and Trips - More
The nightlife in Marsa Alam is quite low key, which is great for those who have young families. Most of the evening entertainment is confined to the hotels where belly dancers wiggle the night away. Many of the hotels run kids clubs which will keep them happily occupied.

If you seeking something a wee bit more adventurous then why not go on a guide safari tour of Wadi el Gemal National Park on camel back. You could also visit the Emerald Mines or explore the ancient Temple of Seti I at Khanais.
